- Luke 22:41-42
- "And he was withdrawn from them about a stone's cast, and kneeled down, and prayed, Saying, Father, if thou be willing, remove this cup from me: nevertheless not my will, but thine, be done."
- Problem:
- Moslems argue as follows: Jesus prayed to God that he would not have to die. Because he was a prophet God granted his prayer and Jesus did not die on the cross.
- Solution:
- Not every prayer of a prophet is always granted. For example, David's prayer was not granted when his child by Bathsheba died (2 Sam. 12:15-19).
- In this case, Jesus did not simply and without condition pray that he should not die. Instead he acknowledged that it was God's will that he should die, and he went on to accept the will of God and go to death, even though he would have preferred not to die, all within the same prayer. To ignore this would be to look at part of a verse entirely without context.
- Jesus did not pray to escape death, but to follow God's will (albeit after stating that he did not wish to die). God therefore granted the prayer in the final form in which it was made to him.
