- 1 Corinthians 15:31
- "I protest by your rejoicing which I have in Christ Jesus our Lord, I die daily."
- Problem:
- Moslems claim that the Bible uses hyperbolic language to describe suffering. Paul says that he died daily, but he did not literally do so. They claim that where the Bible says that Jesus died (e.g. Matt. 27:50; Luke 9:22; Acts 3:15; Rom. 5:6,8; 8:34; 1 Cor. 8:11; 1 Thess. 2:15; 4:14) it merely refers to a similar symbolic death.
- Solution:
- Many of these passages do not say that Jesus died continually. They say that he died once and rose again (e.g. Matt. 16:21; Mark 8:31; 9:31; Luke 9:22; Acts 3:15; Rom. 14:9; 1 Cor. 15:3,4; 1 Thess. 4:14).
- One could use the Moslem argument to prove that, as far as the Bible is concerned, no-one ever dies - all references to dying being symbolic. This would be equally false.
