John 19:14
"And it was the preparation of the passover, and about the sixth hour: and he saith unto the Jews, Behold your King!"

Problem:
Moslems cite this passage, together with passages like Matthew 27:46 which put the death of Jesus at about the ninth hour and deduce that Jesus was on the cross less than three hours. Death by crucifixion would require longer than three hours. Therefore, they argue, Jesus did not die in the crucifixion.

Solution:
  1. Jesus was crucified at the third hour (9 a.m.), as can be seen from Mark 15:25.

  2. At about the ninth hour Jesus shouted loudly (Matt. 27:46). This means that he was not dead at this point. According to Matthew 27:50 Jesus died shortly after this, quite suddenly. However, This means that he was on the cross for a little over six hours to his death.

  3. The time from unconsciousness to death in crucifixion is very short, less than 20 minutes. Thus if Jesus were still alive but appeared to be dead he would have died within 20 minutes. Jesus was not removed from the cross immediately for burial. It was when evening was come (Matthew 27:57; Mark 15:42-45) that Joseph of Arimathaea came to ask Pilate for the body. Thus Jesus would be on the cross for another hour or so after his apparent death, which would ensure that he was really dead.

  4. After Jesus was found to be dead a spear was thrust into his side (John 19:34) and water and blood came out of the wound. The water could have come from the lungs or the pericardium (the membrane around the heart); the blood could have come from the spleen, the liver or the heart if Jesus had been dead. A spear thrust that pierced lungs or pericardium would kill Jesus if he were not already dead.

  5. After his resurrection Jesus walked to Emmaeus (7 miles - see Luke 24:13). He wouldn't have been able to do this after crucifixion without a miracle, as his feet had been pierced by nails. This shows that he was not simply resuscitated.

  6. The sixth hour of John 19:14 was probably the sixth hour after Jesus' arrest. This shows the shortness of the various trials of Jesus.
