- Deuteronomy 13:5
- "And that prophet, or that dreamer of dreams, shall be put to death; because he hath spoken to turn you away from the LORD your God, which brought you out of the land of Egypt, and redeemed you out of the house of bondage, to thrust thee out of the way which the LORD thy God commanded thee to walk in. So shalt thou put the evil away from the midst of thee."
- Problem:
- The Law of Moses required that a false prophet should be put to death. Moslems assert that if Jesus had been put to death this would have proved that he was a false prophet. As a true prophet therefore, they argue, he could not have been put to death and the Bible is denigrating him to suggest that he was put to death.
- Solution:
- This is an elementary logical error. A implies B is not the same as B implies A. The fact that Jesus was put to death does not imply that he was a false prophet.
- Other true prophets were put to death for example Zechariah the son of Berechiah (2 Chron. 24:20-22) and Abel (Gen. 4:8). This is a common feature in Jewish history (Matt. 23:29-35). True prophets were often persecuted, and sometimes killed.
