- John 20:17
- "Jesus saith unto her, Touch me not; for I am not yet ascended to my Father: but go to my brethren, and say unto them, I ascend unto my Father, and your Father; and to my God, and your God."
- Problem:
- This verse tells us that Jesus had not ascended to God at the time of his resurrection. Moslems assert that whenever someone dies they go back to the Creator. As Jesus had not yet ascended to God, they argue, he could not have died.
- Solution:
- The Moslem interpretation of the passage is based on a false assumption. It is not true to say that everyone goes to the creator immediately after death and there is no passage in the Bible that suggests it. No-one (except Jesus) will meet God until after the day of judgment (Acts 2:34; John 3:13).
- Mary was not to touch (some versions say "cling to") Jesus because although he had been raised bodily from the dead he had not yet been raised from earth to his Father's side. It would seem that Jesus went to God considerably after he was raised.
- If the Moslem wishes to use this passage to argue that Jesus was not raised from the dead he must accept its words. This means that he must accept that Jesus the prophet of God has God as his Father.
