Circumcision

Genesis 17:14
"And the uncircumcised man child whose flesh of his foreskin is not circumcised, that soul shall be cut off from his people; he hath broken my covenant."

Problem:
Moslems note that the sign given to Abraham of his covenant was circumcision. This sign was very important and Moslems infer that therefore all believers should be circumcised, even in the present day.

Solution:
  1. There were two covenants between God and Abraham, a covenant of faith (Gen. 15:6,18) and a covenant of obedience to the law (Gen. 17:2). Those who are under the covenant of faith only need not take part in circumcision.

  2. The following argument was made by the Apostle Paul; nevertheless it is an argument of logic based on other scripture, and does not depend on the inspiration of Romans for its power. Justification is through faith. Abraham was justified long before he was circumcised (Rom. 4:9,10), because he was faithful, as one can see from Genesis 15:18. Justification was dependent on the faith of Abraham, and on nothing else. Circumcision was instituted later (Gen. 17:9-14) in a second covenant between God and Abraham. This covenant did not affect justification in the sight of God as this was already in force by the covenant of faith of Genesis 15. Therefore there is no need to be circumcised in order to be forgiven and justified in the sight of God.

  3. Circumcision is a sign of humbleness of heart before God. The true follower of God needs to be circumcised in the mind (Rom. 2:29), but bodily circumcision is a sign which is now fulfilled.
