Isaiah 66:1
"Thus saith the LORD, The heaven is my throne, and the earth is my footstool: where is the house that ye build unto me? and where is the place of my rest?"

Problem:
The Church of Christ argues that since the throne of God is in heaven, and the earth is made his "footstool," Christ cannot rule literally on the earth, since this would be the "footstool" of God.

Solution:
  1. There are two thrones referred to in Scripture:
    1. God's throne - "To him that overcometh will I grant to sit with me in my throne, even as I also overcame, and am set down with my Father in his throne." (Rev. 3:21).
    2. Christ's throne - "He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David:" (Luke 1:32 cf. 1 Chron. 11:4,5). This is the throne that was overturned in the days of Zedekiah, and to be restored when Christ returns: "I will overturn, overturn, overturn, it: and it shall be no more, until he come whose right it is; and I will give it him." (Ezekiel 21:27). "
When the Son of man shall come in his glory, and all the holy angels with him, then shall he sit upon the throne of his glory:" (Matthew 25:31). This throne is to be established on the earth, as Luke 1:32 cf. 1 Chron. 11:4,5 indicate. The earth is now the Lord's footstool, but it will become the dominion of His Son in the Age to come. (Psa. 72).

  2. The "footstool" of Jesus Christ will be his enemies: "The LORD said unto my Lord, Sit thou at my right hand, until I make thine enemies thy footstool." (Psalms 110:1). Since this ruling is said to be from Zion "in the midst of thine enemies" then clearly the reigning is from the earth, not heaven. See Psa. 110:2: "The LORD shall send the rod of thy strength out of Zion: rule thou in the midst of thine enemies."
